William F. “BJ” Harrington (1931-2010)

A proud son of Yonkers, Manhattan College and Fordham Law School, blessed with a sparkling personality and an optimistic nature, BJ had absolutely no quit in him. He was admired by all – even those who, from time to time, might have disagreed with him. He looked confidently at the world around him and always viewed life as the “glass half-full”.

BJ’s first priority and greatest love was for his wife of 55 years, Audrey, their children, Bill, Brian, Mary Pat, Mary Beth and Peter and his beloved grandchildren.

He was devoted to his faith, his Church, its’ institutions, law firm and you, his fellow Friendly Sons of St. Patrick.

BJ’s philosophy was centered on the notion of “living for others” which was demonstrated in myriad ways. He was always a leader, not just a follower; legal counsel to Lieutenant Governor Malcolm Wilson, an indefatigable fund raiser and active player in directing the boards of the Inner-City Scholarship Fund, St. Joseph’s Seminary, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, St. Agnes and St. Joseph’s Hospitals, and his favorite, the Elizabeth Seton Pediatric Center, currently rising in North Yonkers, to name but a few. His enormous energy also led him in his professional life to managing partner of his law firm of which he was so proud, board positions with Fordham, Pace and Ave Maria Law Schools and last, but certainly not least, as Chairman of the Board of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick for 30 years.

So many of us who have had the privilege of working with him are much better for the experience - although at least a few very close friends, would jokingly say – also a bit poorer – after BJ’s frequent phone calls seeking financial support for his endless charitable works.

God Bless, “BJ,” and may the heavenly host greet you with “Céad Mílle Fáilte.”

We all miss you, but are so much better for having known you.
